SIM-cards

A SIM-card implies the subscriber identification module used in mobile communication

SIM-cards are applied in GSM networks. Other modern mobile networks usually apply other identification modules similar to SIM and carrying out similar functions: USIM in UMTS networks, R-UIM in CDMA networks, etc.

SIM card

The main function of a SIM-card is keeping identification information about a subscriber’s account, which enables subscribers to change mobile phones easily and quickly without changing their accounts but simply putting their SIM-cards into another phone. With this purpose, a SIM-card contains a software-equipped microprocessor and data with the card’s identification keys (IMSI, Ki, etc.), encoded in the card during its production and used at the stage of the card (and its subscriber’s) identification by a GSM network.

Scratch-cards

A card made of cardboard or plastic with certain secret information indicated under a protective non-transparent and erasable layer on it.

The card has received its name after the English word «scratch». Such name is rather reasonable. In the production process a secret code, a picture or a word is put on the card and covered with a protective layer. In order to find out the secret information the protective layer should be scratched off the card’s surface.

The usual use of scratch-cards is to store access codes to the prepaid services (e.g. fixed/mobile/IP-telephony, Internet access and other types of connection). The secret information (e.g. PIN-code) is stored on the scratch-card until the protective layer is removed manually by erasing or damaged accidentally.
